Air source heat pumps (heat pump boilers) are an extremely efficient and green solution to heating your home and hot water, and are set to replace traditional boiler systems in the very near future.
An air source heat pump takes thermal energy from the air outside, and then via a compression process similar to that of a household refrigerator, but in reverse, it turns that little bit of heat in the air into enough heat to run your domestic hot water and heating system.

An air source heat pump still requires a limited electricity supply (however this can be supplied to an extent, or offset by, your solar PV system if you have one), however it is still up to 5 times more efficient than any other traditional gas or electricity based heating system, whilst still providing you with the same level of comfort and push of a button functionality, as a traditional heating system.
Due to the governments green energy initiatives traditional heating systems are set to become a thing of the past. In a couple of years time all new homes will have to be built with an air source heat pump (or similar) instead of a traditional boiler heating system.
Air source heat pumps allow you to heat your home and hot water by using renewable energy, reducing your heating spend, massively reducing your carbon footprint, and when combined with a solar pv system takes you another step closer to total energy self sufficiently.
They are also covered by the Renewable Heat Incentive making them a sensible investment not only in terms of energy savings, but also in terms of generating an income for you to help pay for the cost of your system.
Why Choose an Air Source Heat Pump
For a number of years now alternative energy has been a hot topic of discussion by politicians and consumers, and there is now no escaping the fact that without everyone making real steps to reduce their carbon footprint will drain the planets precious resources and cause potentially serious environmental damage.
As a part of our carbon footprint reduction we need to cut down on the amount of non renewable energy use, as well as learning to become more efficient in the energy we use.
The need to change to renewable and self sufficient energy generation is further compounded by the ever increasing cost of using conventional non renewable energy. We have all seen a huge increase in our gas and electricity bills and this is due to continue increasing at a conservatively predicted rate of 10% every year.
An enormous amount of our current energy usage goes into heating domestic hot water and especially running household central heating systems.
This is where an Air Source Heat Pump system comes in as it is capable of effectively running your domestic central heating system, as well as heating your hot water. It can be used to supply all the heat you require to supply all your domestic hot water needs, and it can fully heat your home through your existing or upgraded central heating radiators, or better still, via an under-floor heating system. It also operates in a user friendly style with all the functionality of a traditional heating system (timers, thermostatic controls etc.,) and it can be connected up to your existing central heating system pipework, (although it will most likely require a new hot water cylinder.) It can do all this whilst consuming very little electrical energy, and it can in fact potentially be run by your Solar PV system so it doesn’t need to consume any expensive and non renewable purchased in power.
It is the green heating system that is set to replace traditional gas boilers and other heating systems in the very near future.
Air Source Heat Pumps are well established with millions of homes globally now using this technology to heat their homes and hot water. As a result this technology is now very advanced, highly affordable, and coupled with the government backed incentives that are still available, a system will rapidly even repay its own costs, not just from reductions in your energy bills, but also from money you will receive from the Renewable Heat Incentive.
The Renewable Heat Incentive will be reducing over time so there has never been a better time to make your first steps towards self sufficiency and environmental responsibility.
